DPI/Fisheries - Spearing Groper

Spearing Groper is illegal!

After two separate incidents on the south coast recently NSW DPI Fisheries are reminding people that Groper, a NSW state emblem, areprotected from spearfishing in all NSW waters.
A timely call to the Fishers Watch line enabled NSW DPI Fisheries officers to apprehend a man allegedly in possession of 6 speared Groper at Bermagui. Officers seized the 6 Groper and the man’s diving gear including a speargun. All of the seized items have been retained as evidence.
In a separate incident, fisheries officers searched a boat at the Quarantine Bay boat ramp, south of Eden and found 6 speared Groper. Fisheries Officers spoke to a man connected with the boat, who allegedly admitted to spearing the Groper in Twofold Bay. The 6 Groper and the man’s diving gear were seized and retained as evidence.
Fishers are reminded that Groper can be both blue and brown/red in colour depending on their age and sex. Groper have a legal length of 30cm, only 1 over 60cm with a bag limit of 2 and Groper can be taken by line only.
